The clay pan of Deadvlei contains numerous camel thorn trees that have been dead for at least 600 years. At that time a drought dried up the Tsauchab river, 1000 foot dunes encroached on the dried up marsh, and the river was blocked. The wood of the dead trees does not decompose because the area is so dry.
